What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's platform for businesses that need more than one phone and one person answering chats. It lets a whole team work from one WhatsApp number, send approved broadcast messages to opted in customers, automate replies, and connect WhatsApp to a CRM.
You cannot use the API on its own. It has no app or screen, so you reach it through a provider like Tawasel, which gives your team the inbox and tools on top. The difference from the free WhatsApp Business app comes down to scale and control:
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API with Tawasel | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can reply | The phone owner plus a few linked devices | Your whole team, with chats assigned to the right person |
| Broadcasts | Only to contacts who saved your number | To any opted in customer, using Meta approved templates |
| Automation | Greeting and away messages | AI chatbot, routing rules, reminders and follow up sequences |
| CRM | Labels only | Contacts, pipeline stages, notes and appointments |
| Reporting | Basic message counts | Response times, agent workload and campaign delivery |
| Cost | Free | Platform fee plus Meta's charge per template message |

What the WhatsApp Business API costs in the UAE
Your monthly bill has two parts: the Tawasel plan, and Meta's charge for each template message delivered. Meta has billed per delivered message since 1 July 2025, and from 1 October 2026 service replies are free only for the first 1,000 a month per number. Tawasel adds nothing on top of Meta's rate.
Tawasel plans
| Plan | Monthly price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | AED 99 | Small teams getting started on the API |
| Growth | AED 279 | Growing teams that run regular campaigns |
| Pro | AED 549 | Multi branch teams with more numbers and volume |
Every plan has no setup fee. Full limits and add ons are on the pricing page.
Meta's charges for UAE numbers
| Message type | Example | Approx. AED per delivered message |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Offers and promotional broadcasts | 0.16 to 0.18 |
| Utility | Order updates and appointment reminders | 0.04 to 0.06 |
| Authentication | One time passwords | 0.04 to 0.06 |
| Service | Replies within 24 hours of the customer's last message | First 1,000 a month per number free, then Meta's standard rate |
Example: a Dubai salon on the Starter plan that sends 1,000 promotional messages a month and stays within the 1,000 free service replies would pay AED 99 to Tawasel plus roughly AED 160 to 180 to Meta.
Rates change. Meta reviews its rate card regularly. Use the WhatsApp API pricing calculator to estimate your own bill, and read the UAE pricing guide for worked examples and where other providers add markups.
How to get started
- Start your free trial. Create a Tawasel account. No card is needed.
- Connect your number on a computer. Tawasel opens Meta's signup window, where you log in with Facebook, choose or create your business portfolio and confirm your number by code. You can connect a new number or keep one that already runs on the WhatsApp Business app.
- Verify your business with Meta. Upload your trade licence in Meta Business settings. Unverified portfolios can only connect a limited number of phone numbers, so do this early if you plan to run several branches or teams.
- Get your templates approved. Write the messages you want to send first, such as reminders or offers. Meta reviews each template, often within minutes.
- Invite your team and go live. Add agents, set routing rules and switch on the AI chatbot.
The full checklist, including documents and common rejection reasons, is in our WhatsApp Business API UAE setup guide. If you want the verified badge as well, see the green tick guide.
Who uses it in the UAE
Real estate
Agencies connect one number per team, qualify portal leads with the chatbot, and route each enquiry to the right agent with the budget and area already captured.
Clinics and healthcare
Reception answers patients in Arabic and English from one inbox, and appointment reminders go out automatically as low cost utility messages.
Retail and online stores
Order updates, delivery notices and offers reach customers on the app they check most, with replies landing back in the same inbox.
Training and services
Driving schools, salons and consultancies take bookings, share price lists and send reminders without staff answering the same questions all day.
How to choose a WhatsApp Business API provider in the UAE
Most providers use the same Meta API underneath, so the differences are in pricing, language and support. Ask every provider these questions:
- Do you add a markup to Meta's message fees? Many do. Ask for their marketing message rate and compare it with Meta's.
- Do you bill in AED? Paying in dollars adds card fees and exchange costs every month.
- How well does it handle Arabic? Check right to left layout, Arabic templates and whether the chatbot understands Gulf dialect.
- Can I keep my current number? Coexistence lets you keep the WhatsApp Business app running on the same number.
- Is there a free trial without a card? You should be able to test with real customers before you pay.
- Where is support based? A team in your time zone that speaks Arabic makes onboarding much faster.
